Preparing Your Rucksack

Packing a bag to go trekking is the beginning of your adventure and really exciting! To keep that pleasure, ETEENPÄIN Trekking offers you its advice, but we know there’s always a personal touch in that matter!

List for a Summer Time Trekking

  • Trekking rucksack fitted with adjustment straps. Minimum 55liters.
  • Wet weather bag which gives protection from bad weather.
  • Sleeping-bag - light and compact. Weight around 1 to1,7kg. Comfort temperature between 0 to -5°C.
  • Light and strong mattress (the self-inflating ones are quite fragile)
  • Pair of telescopic walking sticks (to keep a good balance and to cross over the difficult parts of the trail)
  • Pair of trekking shoes with good ankles support, well resisting against bad weather, already used and tested several times (ankles must be kept safe even  though the trail is easy, and the feet must be kept dry)
  • Pair of sandals for the “after-trekking” part of the day.
  • Waterproof and wind breaker jacket.
  • Waterproof pants or a rain cape.
  • Polar jacket.
  • Light hat.
  • 2 pants-bermuda (pants with removable legs)
  • 1 bermuda (shorts)
  • 3 breathable t.shirts.
  • 1 cotton t.shirt (after-trek)
  • 1 swimming suit.
  • 3 pairs of  trekking socks.
  • 1 pair of cotton socks.
  • 1 light and compact towel.

List for a Spring and Fall Times Trekking

  • Trekking rucksack fitted with adjustment straps. Minimum 55liters

  • Sleeping-bag - light and compact. Weight around 1 to1,7kg. Comfort temperature between 0 to -5°C.
  • Light and strong mattress (the self-inflating ones are quite fragile)

List for a Winter Time Trekking

  • Trekking rucksack fitted with adjustment straps. Minimum 55liters
  • Wet weather bag which gives protection from bad weather.
  • Sleeping-bag - light and compact. Weight between 1,5 to 2kg. Comfort temperature around  -7°C and more.
  • Light and strong mattress (the self-inflating ones are quite fragile)
  • Pair of telescopic walking sticks (to keep a good balance and to cross over the difficult parts of the trail)
  • Pair of trekking shoes with high rods, waterproof (adapted for practicing snowshoeing), already used and tested several times.
  • Pair of gaiters.
  • Pair of light shoes that resist to humidity for the “after-trekking” part of the day.
  • Warm, waterproof and windbreaker jacket (jacket you may use for skiing)
  • Warm, waterproof and windbreaker  pants (pants you may use for skiing)
  • Polar jacket.
  • Hat that covers your ears and your forehead very well.
  • Gloves for snow.
  • 1 scarf.
  • 2 warm and easy-going pants.
  • 3 breathable t-shirts with long sleeves.
  • 1 cotton t.shirt with long sleeves (after-trek)
  • 2 thermal underwears.
  • 1 swimming suit.
  • 3 pairs of  long and warm socks.
  • Light and compact towel.

List of Small Equipment Common to all Trekkings

  • 1 headlamp and its batteries + 1 candle (a precious help just in case...)
  • 1 water bottle (thermos for a trekking in winter time)
  • 1 knife.
  • 1 soap respecting the environnement (soap with natural ingredients)
  • 1 lighter.
  • Toilet paper, wipes.
  • Shampoo respecting the environnement (shampoo with  natural ingredients)
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste.
  • Nail-clippers (useful in case of a problem with your nails)
  • Lip Protection - chapsticks (in winter time).
  • Camera.
  • Freezer bags to protect your food and liquids of humidity and small accidents.

Notes

Our advice and the listings are only for the trekking trip itself. A second bag for your other travelling items and your after trekking clothes may be left at the agency and found back at the end of the trekking. Remember: the aircraft airlines command limits about the weight of your luggages. Check out their rules. Please, consider the number of days, the time of the year and the place where you will go trekking. The content of your backpack may change. The trekkings of the agency are in a full-autonomy. That means your rucksack must contain all of what you need for several days. If you don’t own the complete equipment for trekking, don’t forget to make a difference between trekking and marketing. In other words, go shopping with your conscience and listen to the seller with one ear or read the tags with one eye. ETEENPÄIN Trekking believes that trekking and hiking activities are open to anyone and any wallet. Prepare your rucksack a few weeks before time. We can’t think about everything in one instant. Consider this very important point: leave some room in your backpack for the food, the kitchen set, the first-aid kit and the tent that the agency will furnish you for the time of the trekking. Scandinavia is not the Mediterranean! The sun is very bright, but the temperatures are much less stifling in summer time. They may even be really cool during the nights, and sometimes during the day in the Lapland region. This coolness is real in spring and fall times, and the precipitations are occurring more often. The snow hasn’t said its last word in April and May, as well in September and October. Autumn starts in August in the Lapland region! The winter temperatures are around -5°/-10°C on average and may go to around -20°/-35°C. But you get used to it, so it’s not so bad and the landscapes are just gorgeous. Walking, yes, but you must think about your sleep too. For trekking in summer time, consider the sun who doesn’t want to sleep! Something to keep your eyes in darkness may be useful for people who can’t find their sleep when it’s not dark.
